Does Green Tea Help You Lose Weight? Here Are The Facts

Does green tea help you lose weight? The short answer is yes, but with some cravats. It is not the weight loss wonder that some are claiming. So, let's explore what it can do to help you drop those unwanted pounds.

Medical science has shown that, to lose one pound of weight (fat), your body must burn about 3500 more calories than it consumes. Every effective diet or exercise program on earth is designed to help you to do that one thing.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? Eat less, exercise more, lose weight.

While it is simple, it's certainly not easy. And, for some that take this simple idea too far, it can have adverse affects.

Mother Nature has programmed our bodies to, above all, survive. When you consume too few calories, your metabolism will naturally slow, conserving the stored calories (fat) that it has available. The result is that your body burns fewer fat calories and begins burning the calories that are stored in the protein of your muscle mass.

Continuing to exercise with this condition will only cause you to lose muscle, not fat. I can only assume that this is not your goal.

Okay, then, how does green tea help you lose weight?

It won't! Not by itself. As I said earlier, this tea is not a weight loss miracle. It is, however, an effective weight loss aid.

If you can muster enough will power to eat better and exercise a bit more, green tea can be of tremendous help. It will naturally boost your metabolism, making it easier for your body to burn the fat that is already there. It has also been shown to prevent your body from absorbing much of the fat that you eat.

Permanent weight loss is best achieved slowly. This assures that you are actually burning fat, not muscle. It will also make it much easier to maintain your weight once the excess fat is gone.

Does green tea help you lose weight? The bottom line is this: If you will adopt a reasonable diet (less fat, more veggies), resolve to exercise a little more (take the stairs, not the elevator), use green tea to boost your metabolism, and stay with the program, You will reach your long term weight loss goals.

One last thought...green tea is not an appetite suppressant. There is, however, one green tea extract that contains natural antioxidants and appetite suppressants to help you win the diet battle. I know it worked for me.

Does Green Tea Help With Weight Loss?

Everyone recognizes that exercise is crucial to losing weight. It helps burn calories, increases your energy level, and helps build muscle that in turn stimulates your metabolism even more. The catechin polyphenols found in green tea seem to stimulate the liver's and muscle cell's use of fatty acids. This in turn slows the rate that carbohydrates are utilized which helps sustain endurance for longer periods of exercise. Actually, a study that gave green tea extract to lab rats enhanced the quantity of time that the rats could swim before tiring out by as much as 24 percentage points. Greater endurance means increased exercise, which leads to more calories being burned, and in turn more pounds lost.

Research conducted by the Japanese and scientists suggests that if the average individual drank five cups of the tea each day, they would then burn an extra 70 or 80 extra calories due to an effect known as thermogenesis. This is the process of the production of heat in organisms. Although much of the thermogenesis effect found in green tea is due to its caffeine content, studies also imply that thermogenesis in green tea is beyond the level of caffeine found in it and due to the presence of epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG.

No matter what the cause, an extra 70 or 80 calories burned each day doesn't come near the 500 calorie loss needed each day in order to drop a pound a week. And it's not anywhere near the calorie deficit required to drop "inches per week" from your waist that some sites promote. Based on the research, if an individual did nothing different beside adding five cups of green tea each day to their diet, then over a period of 43 days you could count on losing about a pound. Over a one year period, you could anticipate about an 8 pound weight loss. So although there is a correlation between weight loss and green tea consumption, it's not at the level that some think

It is clear that drinking this tea alone won't be enough for significant weight loss. Still, however, green tea can be useful as an aid to weight loss. The extra 80 calories burned a day may be just what you need to help tip the scales from too many calories to a calorie deficit, particularly when you also eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
